Dressing in 3 Colors

Do you ever struggle to put an outfit together, and are dying to figure out what the perfect finishing touch would be? Why, it's dressing in threes, mon amie! I came across this post about dressing in 3 colors as a sort of rule of thumb, and I love it! After reading it, I noticed I had been applying this "rule" to my more successful outfits for quite some time (and apparently without even realizing it).

Let me break it down for you:

  • Of course there are exceptions, but dressing in more than 3 colors can look very busy and unpleasing to the eye.
  • Floral and other patterns are most definitely "colors" of their own, therefore you can add two other colors to an outfit.
  • Since black and white are neutrals, they can be excluded from the 3 color palette. This means that you can sometimes dress in 4 colors, if one of them is black or white.

This is by no means a set-in-stone rule, rather, it's a prescription or sort of a guideline to help you if you're in an outfit rut.

Patterns
In the photo on the left, the three colors are floral, white, and red
In the photo on the right, the three colors are black and white patterned blouse, white, and black

A little more simplicity
Left: green, burgundy, and blue (the black purse can be the neutral in this outfit)
Right: White, grey, and cream

Blanc Mode style
Left: grey, blue, and burgundy
Right: blue, black, and grey

What do you think of this guideline? Have you found yourself dressing in 3 colors, or do you plan on doing so in the future?

Have a wonderful week, and thank you so much for reading!
